First Base. Go for bold, clear graphics that are easy to understand

The first thing visitors will note are your graphics. You want them to step on that first base plate and stay for a while, so avoid ornate, mysterious graphics that may confuse or distract. You want a memorable image, one that sticks. You may obtain these from your own designers or from stock photo companies. Test these out in advance to see what kinds of associations they evoke in the viewer. Remember that simple, clean lines are more memorable. A good banner stand will make the display pop!

A Teacher's Tool

I teach high school geography and have always used retractable banner stands to display the many maps that I use when teaching my class. A lot of teachers will just have the maps hanging from the chalk board at the front of the class but I like displaying them in a way that I can move them closer to the class so they can see exactly what country or state I’m talking about. Kids get more interested if they can actually touch and see the subject of your discussion.

I’ve collected over two hundred maps from around the world and I display them all using different kinds of banner stands. These are my personal maps and I like to guard them carefully from being damaged. Keeping them secure in the banner stands helps to preserve them and keeps them clean for many, many years. I would never risk my investment to just hang from the chalk board as maps, such as these, are usually displayed. I am able to take care of them properly so that I can use them for all of my career and still have them in good condition when I retire.

I also belong to a very large geography club that travels across the world during summer vacations. I am often asked to make presentations to the club members using my maps for references. When I began decorating our nursery for our new baby, I wanted to make the room something amazing and special. I wanted her room to be an experience of much more than the typical teddy bears and bunnies. I decided to hire somebody who could create custom wall murals that covered all four walls of her room with a variety of animals.

After an extensive search I finally found somebody skilled in art that had done many such murals. He began by sketching the entire scene on all the walls and waited for my approval. Once I gave him the OK he began painting. The room came alive with colors and he almost had the animals jumping off the walls. The nursery is unlike any I have ever seen and I know my daughter will enjoy her room for many years to come. He even had hand painted floor decals that he placed on the floor that looked like rocks, sand, and water. It is such an amazing room.

I mentioned to the artist that I knew there would come a time when we would have to change her room. He told me about all the different wall paper murals he had and that when the time came we could pick something just as amazing to cover up the animals. Trade shows are great opportunities. But there is no denying that exhibiting at trade shows is an investment in your business’s future. However, that investment doesn’t have to be as large as you might think! Today we look at some great ways to improve your performance without increasing your trade show display, set up and transport costs.

1. Before the show, send email reminders to your loyal customers, suppliers and strong prospects asking them to visit you at the show. Try to offer something exclusive that they wouldn’t get simply by visiting your showroom … have some products in action, samples of reasonable value, etc.

2. Create a competition related to your trade show participation. You could simply do a drawing for everybody that stops by your booth, or you could offer instant rewards for anybody who is invited to the show and brings a friend.

3. Pay attention to security. This is an unfortunate, but real fact of trade show life – you will have valuable things in your trade show display area, it will be busy and crowded, and you won’t always have your eye on the merchandise. Planning can avert anything being taken.

4. Do an online customer service, active listening, or sales skills refresher in the days before you go. Even if you have quite a bit of experience, there may be a new tactic you haven’t thought about and could have an opportunity to try out.

5. Re-assess who you will send to the show. The people with the best customer service and sales skills won’t necessarily be the most senior people in the company. If anyone is likely to feel threatened, at least have somebody else accompany them, if not replace them.

A Guide to File Specs for Banner Stand Printing

If you've just battled your way through a banner stand layout in an unfamiliar program, or even if you're using an application that you're quite familiar with but sending to a very different printing house, you'll be on the file spec rollercoaster. I personally have known it to take at least as much time as the design did to ready the actual file for the printing process. This usually happens when you don't understand the requirements properly, and your banner stand printer has to send the file back to be modified, and again, and again … sometimes this comedy of errors becomes more of a tragedy! It isn’t possible to list the exact process of readying your file in every design program, but today we'd like to explore some general hints on having a smooth banner stand printing experience.

If you need a bleed on your file…

You can usually add a bleed to your file with an option under File or Edit menu of most graphics programs. If a search doesn’t turn up a dialog box called File Preferences, or something similar, just search for "bleed" in your Help menu. Your printer will need to let you know how many millimeters of bleed are required by their machines.

If you have writing on your banner stand…

Fonts are a common sticking area in the printing industry. Sometimes only fonts of a certain format can be accepted; some printers will need the fonts converted to outlines, and sometimes your font file comes corrupted … and you have to replace it entirely. The safest option is to convert your fonts to outlines, an action which essentially makes the words into pictures. This should be the last thing you do, and you should always keep a copy of your file with the fonts preserved as fonts, in case you later want to edit the writing.

If you are using Microsoft Office for layout…

Be prepared for your printer to quietly sigh. Microsoft Office applications can do layout, but they are not printer-friendly. Install Acrobat Professional to make a pdf file from your Office files.

If you are using photos or illustrations in your layout…

You will need to print-ready these separately. You will have to ensure that they are in the right color space (CMYK for printing), at the right resolution, and of the right file format to get the best quality on your banner stands. There are plenty of free photo editing applications that can handle these tasks, or you could buy a high quality, comprehensive app like Adobe Photoshop.

How I Beautifully Decorated My New Home

I recently purchased my first home and am taking great delight in picking out the colors for my bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, dining room and living room.
